Wahabbism & Saudi Arabia

1979 - 500 wahabbi hardliners took over grand mosque in mecca at start of islamic 15th century declaring (not himself declaring) al-Qahtani Mahdi.
Clerics allowed monarchy to fight in the mosque (this shocked bin Laden) in exchange for stricter Islam in the country (TVs, educated women etc.).
Clerics converted french SAS forces (GIGN) to Islam so they could enter grand mosque to fight off rebels.
Monarchy made wahabbim in foreign policy to fund it with massive petrodollars in other countries to distract hardliners' attention to other countries.
Just few months later, Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan - Saudis helped rebels with this in Afghanistan to distract from their own country.
Also funded Jihadist Pakistani Jamaat Islami, from which taliban emerged.
Now everyone, including Saudis, threatened by Jihadists !

Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal - Summary of biography

Summary of biography of Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal
Presented by Sh. Kamal el-Mekki on YouTube

  • 2 most dangerous situations in Islamic history. i) Abu Bakr (ra) when many turned apostate and ii) AiH (ra) with the fitna of divine origin was questioned Qur'an.
  • Born in Baghdad in 164 AH (Abu Hanifa=80AH, Imam Malik = 96AH).
  • Lived himself and dear mother. Father was Mohammad but unknown so ibn Hanbal used instead. Extreme poverty. Gathering grains dropped by traders in city.
  • Obedience to mother viz. not jumping with other young men across flowing river
  • Threw away letters containing spying info from uncle to Governor and fully confessed in front of both.
  • Studied with Yazid ibn Harun, who joked a lot but not in front of AiH(ra). "D'oh!"
  • Would not accept help or gifts from anyone whatsoever. Shaafi(ra)&AiH(ra) lived very austere lives. Abu Hanifa(ra) did not take khalifa money because was successfull businessman. Imam Malik(ra) did as considered his own work services to state. Imam Malik(ra) had 500 hats/shoes and eat meat every single day, the former always dressed immaculately.
  • In a gathering with Sufyan ibn Iyaina, AiH introduces companion to a young Al-Shaafi, AiH being first to recognize his knowledge.
  • AiH was Muhaddith, Al-Shaafi was Faqih. So when AiH met him, he became Faqih too. [Woman asked many Muhaddith in mosque question on menses but couldn't answer - they pointed to Al-Shaafi, who answered instead.]
  • Collection of ahadith was very detailed & intricate - including minutes taken at meetings. Abdur-Razzaq, AiH's teacher once, would always read out ahadith from book even though he was expert, just in case. AiH subsequently adopted this.
  • Top 5 scholars AiH benefitted from : (for 18 yrs) Hushaim ibnu Bashir (learnt 100 ahadith with narrations in one sitting), Yazid ibnu Harun (commanding presence), Ismael Ibnu Ulaiya (very serious-never laughed), Sufyan ibnu Iyayna (The Muhaddith in Masjid Al-Haram), Abdur-Razzaq (ppl travelled from across the world to visit this storehouse of knowledge).
  • Yazid ibnu Harun died 206 and fitna with creation of Qur'an by the khalifa started (and subsequently doused - by the lives of the scholars, Main one is AiH).
  • AiH, Al-Shaafi, Malik etc. always had a woman behind them; e.g. mothers, sisters.
  • Got married at age 40 so as not to trouble her with moving from place to place for his knowledge seeking etc. Lived with her for 30 yrs. "I never had 1 quarrel with her."
  • When life in perilous danger, stayed with trusted friend for 3 days but no more to follow sunnah of Cave of Thaur. "Does it make sense to follow Sunnah when life is easy and ditch it when hard?"
  • Fitna started in khalifa of Ma'mum . Loved knowledge. Very close to Mut'azilah, very well spoken. Began to think like them. Aljad ibnu Durham was a Muadhib (home tutors) and starter of fitna. They say 'Allah is the ancient and speech is renewable so he cannot talk and He does not speak like humans because there is none like unto Him, thus the Qur'an is created'. But this gets us further into trouble as humans have knowledge, does that mean God doesnt? 'Speak' means God's speaks in a manner befitting to his majesty. Also, everything but God is perfect so would imply Qur'an is imperfect.
  • Ahmad ibn Abi Dawat incited Ma'mun to start fitna of Qur'an creation in 212AH. AiAD was right-hand-man for subsequent 3 khalifas too. Many 2nd-level scholars went along with Qur'an creation as they justified that inside their heart they knew the reality. To avoid direct response, started saying thing like "Qur'an is speech of Allah and all but Allah is created" and fingers trick.
  • So few scholars left - including AiH - that were refuting this! AiH responded "It is the speech of Allah, I don't add to that"
  • Ma'mum slates them all, even those who accepted Ma'mum, and nails them for being childish, worldly etc. However, gives no insult to AiH and they should be chained and beaten and imprisoned.
  • Initially 26 scholars that refused, then 9 remained steadfast. Then 4. Then 2 remained on being called to Ma'mun including AiH. AiH is essentially only imam left with this opinion (the other was just a young man).
  • Along the way, a non-scholar arab met AiH and told him 'you represent the people; if you yield, then all punishment will be because of you so keep firm; the only thing between you and Jannah is death; if they don't kill you, you will die anyway. Wassalam.' Whereas all other scholars had told him earlier that it's permissible due to Qur'an to say that.
  • Along the way, a servant of Ma'mun tells AiH that Ma'mun will kill him with a sword he's never unsheathed before unless AiH yields. So AiH prays to God and immediately after, news spreads that Ma'mun has died. Soldiers take them to a prison, young man dies. AiH honestly says: "I fear the whip". AiH would take feet out of chains himself to sleep/salaat and put them back on during the day for obedience to Ma'mun's instruction, even though he's dead.
  • Mu'tasin was next khalifa; didn't care for knowledge/fiqh; strictly soldier.
  • One argument goes Quran says it was "made" (ja'lam), that means created! AiH: Same word used for People of the Elephant when they looked like broken straw, eaten up. Did Allah 'create' them like that too?
  • Summoned to Muta'sin to debate with him. Muta'sin: "If i didnt have you in custody, wouldnt have approached you". AiH gave proofs including: "Give protection to disbelievers until they hear the kalaam of Allah" hence Kalaam - spoken - must be Quran. Also, "Everything that is created must die" (dream story). Shot  down Mutazilah audience with their arguments one by one in front of khalifa, and AiH voice got louder and louder. Muta'sin was deeply affected by this and AiH's knowledge and that "I would free you with my own hands if you would agree a little with me". AiH: "Give me something from the Qur'an or Sunnah so that I may say it." - i.e. reject compromise.
  • Shaafi had succumbed and agreed to creation of Quran and was asked to debate with AiH. But on the 3rd day in prison, suspected as it's the 3rd day something new would happen; went to hall - was full of soldiers and whippers. Store owners had closed doors as they knew something big was happening and AiH had a following who didn't want him beaten/killed. AiH gave another new proof from ahadith when Moses was spoken to by Allah directly. Mutazilah had no response so Muta'sin smacked him and he fell unconscious. Some of khalifa's guards left the audience in disapproval given his grandfather's standing.
  • On regaining consciousness, Muta'sin told him 'Woe, I had hopes in you' [Note: nothing about whether he was true, his arguments are valid etc.]. Dragged by soldiers and put on whipping frame and both arms dislocated. Soldiers whipped AiH in order, 2 whips at a time so each soldier would not tire and each whip of full power. Muta'sin then got the strongest whipper and told him to kill AiH. Inflicted massively powerful whips until AiH's blood gushed and filled the floor and almost killed until interjection by friend. Temporarily taken to people at khalifa's gate to appease them from violence against khalifa and AiH, bleeding, fasting (as khalifa's food was haram), frail said to them Qur'an is the speech, uncreated. Muta'sin again tied him up and even more severe beating.
  • Imprisoned at a house and then offered salaat (just as Omar(ra) prayed whilst bleeding). Doctor: "I've never seen lashes as bad as this". Had to cut a piece of flesh off off back. Some parts hurt till his very end. Anyhow, the whippers came to apologise with their heads lowered to the house but he said 'I have already pardoned you on day 1 as I want to be among those who are called in Heaven, those who forgive.'
  • Whilst imprisoned, shackled, beaten, lost consciousness, still never broke fast let alone say Qur'an was created.
  • Al Waqab was 3rd khalifa after Muta'sin. Knowledgeable, loved poetry and religion :|. AiH then started to leave house and teach. Ahmad ibn Abi Daud then realized their ideology of the created Qur'an may be under threat and friends of AiH told him fitna may be about to be rekindled so AiH himself stopped teaching. Al Waqab doesn't want to touch AiH and tells him he doesn't want to be where AiH is.
  • Shaikh Ahmad ibn Nasr tried to overthrow Al Waqab but all were caught and Al Waqab asked Ahmad ibn Nasr about the Qur'an. (231AH) AiN (80 years old) says it's the speech of Allah. Was beheaded and khalifa put note on his ear that this was one who 'sees Allah' in hereafter and says Qur'an created and hung for months in east entrance in Baghdad and then moved to west entrance for months.
  • [Al Khatib Al Baghdadi is narrater is] After Al Waqab died, Al Muttawaqil - his brother - took over and was told by adviser that Al Waqab killed a Ahmad ibn Nasr whose tongue recited the Qur'an for 6 years after he killed him. Was rumour but Al Muttawaqil was saddened that righteous man was killed. Asked others including  Ibn Zayat ('burn me if I'm wrong...') and and Harthama ('cut me up if I'm wrong...') and AiAD ('paralyze me if I'm wrong...') that he feels this way - they both say he was a kafir & Al Waqab did the right thing. [Later Al Muttawaqil burnt Ibn Zayat after fitna, Tribe of Huzaya(AiN's tribe) cut up Harthama (without knowing his prayer!) and AiAD died paralyzed]
  • Na'eem ibn Haddad - student of Hushain ibn Nasir. Muhaddith. First to kick off categorisation of ahadith. Tirmidhi, Bukhari learnt from him. Refused creation of Qur'an and imprisoned in a hole for 5 years. Requested to die in chains so could complain to Allah. Al Sha'fi met Yahya al Buaiti for first time (when no fitna etc.) and told him 'SubhanAllah you will die in chains.' His argument against Qur'an "creation => God created all by saying 'Qun' (Be) and it was thus He can speak! Also, if 'Qun' is created => something created ('Qun') actually created all of creation, and not Allah !" Every Friday, washed and got ready to go to Juma but guards stopped him. 'Allah, I responded to your call'.
  • Abu Abdur-Rahman/Ad Rami. Shaikh of Abu Dawood. Asked AiAD in front of Al Waqab if i) creation of Qur'an part of faith, did HPSAW call to it? AiAD dumbfounded, ii) Allah correct when he said 'I perfect your faith on you' or you? , iii) did HPSAW know about this concept and call people to it?, iv) why did 4 Khalifas not call people to it and if they knew of it, why isn't it sufficient for you too to  be quiet. Al Waqab convinced and released him. Fitna ends 232AH, 20 years later.
  • Al Muttawaqil wrote letter saying no one should say Qur'an is created. Summoned to Al Muttawaqil  at 86 years old but turned back as AiH didn't say salaam to one who said Qur'an is created. Al Balkhi - Abbasid - tells khalifa AiH's house has an Ahlul Bait member (Omayyid) and AiH pledged to him. Was attacked by khalifa's people. But AiH refuted he was like that. [Note: Many great scholars have been on different sides of the overthrow-khalifa vs. be-obedient argument] Khalifa knew what was going on and ready to kill Al Balkhi but AiH forgave him ('perhaps he has children and they would be upset by his death').
  • AiH fell sick in 241AH and entire population queued up to see him and businesses nearby could not operate. Passed away, 700k-200m people attended (including hater-innovaters as they knew he was righteous). Zuhr - Asr, keep cycling of Janaza prayers to get through all people. Largest Jinaza ever up until recently (Abdul Aziz bil Baz).
  • Whereas AiAD - only government workers assigned attended his funeral, none else.

Krave vs Nougat Pillows

Kellogg's (relatively) recently introduced Krave - a 'new' type of cereal with a chocolate filling. They've been heavily marketing it and of course, it's an absolute hit with the kids. They describe it thus :

" When you want a tasty breakfast, NOTHING hits the spot like chocolate... Here's something so undeiably good that it's worth getting out of bed for.
With a crispy cereal shell made with oats, what and rice and a smooth chocolate hazelnut centre, it'lld efinitely satisfy your urge for taste! "

While this may indeed be a new type of cereal on the average Tesco cereal shelf, it's actually been around for a much longer time. Lidl have had this cereal for as far back as I can remember, labelled as 'Nougat Pillows'. Having tried Kelloggs' version, it felt like they had put just enough chocolate in that people wouldn't complain. Typical of this fiercely cutthroat multinational, they've tried to maximise profits by putting a huge price tag on the bag. Chocolate, of course, costs much more than wheat and as a result of their stingyness, their Krave is lame and way overpriced...  when compared to Lidl's Nougat Pillows. Lidl's version has far more chocolate - a whole 40%, their pieces are noticeably bigger and chunkier and much more delicious as a result. I'll leave you with this price comparison that'll no doubt leave you stunned ...

Kellogg's Krave           : 8% chocolate    : 375g    : £2.59
Lidl's Nougat Pillows   : 40% chocolate  :  750g   : £1.99

On drinking

"Why don't you drink?"

This is my reasoning for why I don't drink - and in fact more generally, an explanation of my value system which is what I like to live by. This is a narrative of my personal journey and my thoughts along the way to answer a question specifically about me - so please don't take offence from any of this.

Begin with a typical lifespan (pls bear with me - this is mighty relevant )

Go to school/university, graduate, get a job, socialise, wait for Friday to hit every week, eat pizza and watch TV on the weekend or some other entertainment, go on a vacation 2-3 times a year, get married - lovey jubby to begin with before the 'other 4 stages' of marriage kick in :). Then have a few kids, get the best house(s)/car(s) possible, move a couple of jobs in your career either hoping to become intellectually superior, get promoted etc., more ski&sun vacations, go through the usual hell and occasional delight with teenage kids, get old, retire, spend last days watching TV, reading the paper and generally relaxing - eventually end on a bed somewhere with relatives visiting occasionally - or maybe just Christmas. Then offspring grow up to do exactly the same thing .

Of course some people's lives might have some twists and turns to this but this is not too far from what happens in most people's lives. This video explains what I mean - although it's specifically about just the one aspect of marriage (have a look at the interesting comments by users too). This was the question I mulled over for a long time - and, like the commentators on this video, the inevitability of life seems extremely sad for me. What's the point? I've heard this 'meaningless life' realization - even for very wealthy people - hits many people at 40+ (but I guess it got to me early?). This all sounds depressing but I make no apologies - to me such an existence seemed entirely miserable, especially given how incredibly capable humans have evolved to become. Dawkins explains in the final chapter of The God Delusion, 'A much needed gap', that acquiring knowledge of the beauties of the diverse universe is one such pursuit we can find comfort in. However, this was something I've already enjoyed doing from a young age - and certainly following my faith was never a barrier to this, nor does it help in this perplexity.

Quite interestingly, some people consider they're not in this cycle because they don't have kids or aren't married or have an occupation a source of perpetual happiness. This veers off topic but I really feel this is for a sense of self comfort that they're not in this cycle. However, having personally been through the 'kiddy-like excitement' phase at various stages of the youth that is so fiery and hasty and involved in all other sorts of entertainment, I understand there are moments of happiness - I can't say it's a permanent peace/happiness though. Like every other aspect - kids, marriage, a new job, Ben&Jerry's Chocolate Dough Ice Cream - it's a temporary mood elevation. The mental unrest/turmoil still persists.

Upon looking around to see what others were saying and generally looking deeper, it seemed this melancholy affects many people. Rather than giving a link to a white paper describing this psychological phenomenon - here's another video! - of a stand-up comedian Dane Cook (un?)knowingly explaining one symptom of this. We might look at others and think they're wealthy and happy - but we find much later on, they didn't quite have the perfect life they seemed to have on the outset. With that prelude of my outlook on life...

... it was a ~2-week semi-solitary period I spent with some books that changed - I can now say in hindsight - everything for me. I knew God wanted us to behave good, never lie, give to charity, pray at certain times and do other rituals, etc, but this never resonated with me - though admittedly I did some of these some of the time because of my upbringing. I always thought it a bit repetitive, a formality, time that could be spent better - thinking that perhaps maybe at a later age I'd understand better. So it was in this solitary period where I actually concentrated and prayed hard to know if He did exist. I didn't get my wish. But I did realize something very profound - out of the theism books I had with me, I noticed that although most faiths consider God to be 'Living', in reality they considered him dead. For example, most faiths will say God only communicates with prophets or specially chosen people - not the ordinary person. I don't mean communication in the form of signs - like healing miracles where a patient had 'virtually no chance' of surviving but yet did. (To adduce this as proof of His existence is extremely brittle and certainly cannot provide the certainty of God's existence that is like - for instance - the absolute certainty of knowing you have 2 hands). However, the interpretation of Islam given by one movement claimed there is a 'Living God' in a sense that seemed logical to me - one who communicates unambiguously to any and all desirous to go along the route to find Him. For me, it was this one ideology that made me drop everything and set out to seek Him sincerely through this method. After all, if God wanted us to love Him more than our partners, children, parents, how can that be possible without any reciprocation if an attempt is made to achieve nearness to Him. Although tempting to go all out - like some faiths requiring a hermit-like existence - the route I was choosing required me to maintain a balance including work and family life too. In hindsight, this has turned out to be immensely useful in progressing along the spiritual route - details of which would could probably take up an entire blog post in it's own. Somehow, it wasn't just a phase - and a year on - I still don't have the money&power greed that characterized me during my uni years. Nor the several other traits that led me to chase other things ... somewhat like the tazmanian devil in retrospect! Could be strong resolve - but as anyone 'chasing' knows, the love of money has an immense pull. I believe it's one of the initial stages of spiritual development - as is stated "turning to God with such sincerity that their love of the world has become quite cold". I dare not be so pompous as to say that I am x much full of sincerity - I hope this is what has happened to me, it certainly feels like it. God only knows - certainly if it is, this is only an initial stage of development. The lofty goal of acquiring certainty of Him requires hard work, humility in everything and sincere prayers just as the accounts of those who've reached such heights tell us - all of which admittedly have been impossible to do without removing the cynicism and arrogance leading to straight denial of God.

So it is this route, this path, this journey I have chosen to undertaken that has an effect on all my actions. It's the most difficult thing I've ever done/am doing - for so many reasons I can't begin to explain - but thankfully, I get stronger. In retrospect, it's made me a better person not just wrt setting out to fulfil the purpose of my life (as I believe of course is wrt God) but to society generally - again, in many ways I won't enumerate - but all due to this route. Mental unrest has receded leaving a calmness within me - and literally as I write this, I'm reminded of the verse from scripture " It is in the remembrance of God that hearts can find comfort. "

Now I can start to address the question. So - my aim from that point onwards had become - and is - to attain nearness and certainty of God. As with any objective, this requires following instructions and guidelines diligently to achieve the desired aim. Not drinking alcohol is one of them. Another is to watch what you gaze at (i.e.ogling). I choose not to go to pubs as otherwise it would imply my condonement of that institution and, as a secondary effect, the packed nature of pubs means wherever you look, it's all too easy to ogle (and more)! This might seem a bit ott as I could always just have a coke instead, but it's not much different to trying to go to KFC with a devoted PETA activist and telling them they can order the Veg Burger !

My Faith - True Islam
So my faith is Islam - the Ahmadiyya movement specifically. Islam has the privilege of having preserved the pure teachings from the origins - if you look for them - and it is this Islam that I follow. An Islam far removed from the practices of the likes of the government of Saudi Arabia or Pakistan or the Wootton Bassett protesters. An untainted Islam I fell in love with after reading this one book. Subsequent theological study during the past 1 year+ has been delightful, enlightening and rubber-stamped my belief in what I follow. Some hardliners say this is a softening of Islam to make it 'hippy' to suit the liberal West. If that was the case - and my reading dictates it is not -  I would be disgusted to be part of such a weak community that claimed to have faith in God. In actual fact, looking at Muhammad(peace be on him)'s life, liberalisation in worship is exactly the doctrine he practised. Interestingly, there would be a clash if the West were to stop Muslims like myself practicing our faith, resulting in emigration of those who follow this - what I believe - the untainted teaching of Islam. But hopefully that'll never happen - Britain's awesome. And I really like the rain actually for it's therapeutic melody.

In reality, I genuinely don't believe it's possible to behave good, never lie, love God (as required by faith), give freely to charity, etc. etc. without the aim of attaining nearness and certainty to God in mind - and only going on heresay about the 'hereafter' - quite frankly, the 'hereafter' for me was never incentive enough to change. Acquisition of certainty was and I believe is, the only way to know for sure God exists - it cannot be achieved by reasoned arguments or any level of research. (It's no wonder then that senior religious ministers are involved in extremist activities, pedophilia, hate campaigns, military occupation, monetary/political corruption, suppression, etc.- if they had genuine certainty of a God whose attributes are as described in their respective holy books, they wouldn't come near such activities. I don't say all ministers of any particular faith are like this - but history bears testimony that it's more than some insignificant outliers.)

I started writing summaries to remove some myths in my belief but realized this post was getting too long - so here's the condensed one liners:
- Islam claims it's peaceful teachings are fully capable of bringing about peace within a person, between people and between nations.
- Islam (alone) denies having a monopoly of truth and says all people of all religions had Divine guidance
- God communicates with mankind as before and has not barred the avenues to reach Him. Everyone is invited to experiment for himself/herself.
- Islam does not compel us to believe what we don't understand.
- Apostasy is not punishable by death.
- Women have rights to occupational work just like men - forcing men or women into a particular way of life or wearing veils, etc. is baseless in Islam (though muslim women should obviously consider why this teaching is in place for them)
- Shariah law does not force anything - not even Shariah Law if you don't want it! Wonderful.

Finally

If you do believe in a particular faith - but do so nominally to say, appease your partner or maintain family relations, I humbly ask you to treat your God-revealed faith as a most solemn journey. You already have the benefit of being open-minded to your religion; find the truth within it, find what makes sense and consider your faith in the light of new scientific proofs rather than shun it's core teaching for the allure of the world. Look past the rituals.

Finally, if you do not believe in God, all I ask is you consider the possibility of God with an open mind - as this may well be the only post you ever come across in your life asking you to :)  Surely worth the consideration and time once at least - if anything, it would give understanding of what religion seeks to instill in people. I hope the online books on the link at the bottom might have something of interest.

Finally finally (promise), the most important takeaway from this blog post I would say - if anyone is interested in pursuing this further - is that arrogance and cynicism have to be dropped before even trying to investigate further. Logically, wouldn't it be a disgrace for a Mighty Being who purportedly orchestrated this masterpiece of a universe to be 'discovered' by an arrogant strutting cynic? Wouldn't a humble seeker more likely to gain favour with this Being? As mentioned earlier, knowledge alone will not give you that certainty - it's for you to try and see. Otherwise, you could spend years on online forums debating and reading the endless pro- and anti- God books without any real conclusion. In fact, the cynic could even dispute each and every single thing on this post.

Some readers might consider this request, others would laugh, yet others would ridicule, others still would hate - that's everyone's right I guess :)   I only hope there might be the few open-minded people who go on to take that time out to reflect and do their own research into this.
